How to use a cover letter example

Read it for the shape, not the words

Each example follows the same simple order: the job and where you saw it, what you’ve done that fits, why this employer, and when you can start. Keep that order and fill it with your own experience.

Swap in the job’s own words

Look at what the advert asks for, such as “till experience” or “weekend availability”, and say where you really have done it. One real example is worth more than a list of adjectives.

Keep it short and check it

Three or four paragraphs on one page is enough for most jobs. Read it out loud once to catch mistakes, and make sure the employer’s name is right.

Questions about cover letter examples

Can I copy a cover letter example?

Use it as a guide, not a copy. Employers can tell when a letter isn’t about them. Keep the shape and swap in your own experience, the employer’s name and the job you’re applying for.

What should a good cover letter include?

The job you’re applying for, why you want it, one or two real examples that fit the advert, when you can start, and a polite sign-off. Three or four short paragraphs is enough.

Should I start with Dear Sir or Madam?

If you know the person’s name, use it and sign off “Yours sincerely”. If you don’t, “Dear Hiring Manager” is common and friendly today.

Can Ceev write my cover letter?

Yes. Once your CV is unlocked, Ceev writes a letter for each job from your CV and the job advert, in the same design as your CV. Plus includes 3 letters and Premium 10.
