Accounts assistant cover letter example

A strong accounts assistant cover letter shows accuracy with figures, backed by one precise example such as catching a duplicate invoice. It should name the ledgers and software you use and mention any AAT qualification or study.

Ridgeway Builders Merchants

Dear Mrs Lacey,

I am writing to apply for the Accounts Assistant vacancy at Ridgeway Builders Merchants. I currently work in the accounts team of another builders' merchant, where I process purchase invoices, post receipts to the sales ledger, reconcile bank accounts and chase overdue accounts. I hold AAT Level 2 and am working towards Level 3.

I process about two hundred supplier invoices a month, matching each one to a delivery note and purchase order before it is posted on Sage. Last quarter I found that a supplier had invoiced us twice for one delivery. I raised it, got a credit note and the duplicate was never paid.

I also make credit control calls, and I find that being clear and polite gets accounts paid and keeps the customer relationship good. I support month end by preparing reports and checking my own work before I hand it over. I am careful, organised and used to meeting deadlines.

A builders' merchant has plenty of invoices, deliveries and trade accounts, which is the kind of busy ledger work I enjoy. I would welcome the chance to talk to you about the role. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Mohammed Iqbal

Questions about accounts assistant cover letters

Should I mention AAT in the first paragraph?

Yes, briefly, along with your current level and what you are working towards. It helps the reader place you quickly.

What if I have no accounts experience?

Use examples where you handled cash, invoices or stock figures carefully, and say you are working towards or planning AAT study.

Do I need to give figures?

One or two honest numbers, such as invoices processed a month, help the employer see the scale of your work.
