How we write our guides

Our CV, cover letter and career guides are for people who want a clear answer and the next step, not a lecture. These are the rules every guide follows.

Our rules

  • Plain words first

Short sentences and everyday words. If we have to use a term like “personal statement”, we explain it.

  • No made-up facts

We don’t invent statistics, studies, quotes or experts. If we can’t be sure, we leave it out.

  • UK-specific

UK spelling and UK habits: CVs not résumés, GCSEs and A levels, notice periods, “Yours sincerely”.

  • Say when it depends

Where the answer depends on your contract, the job advert or your situation, we say so and tell you what to check.

How a guide is made

We start from real questions

Each guide answers something people ask while they write a CV or apply for a job: how long a CV should be, how to explain a gap, what to say at the start of a cover letter.

We give the answer first

Every guide opens with a short, direct answer, then explains it step by step with examples written for everyday jobs.

We use AI tools, and our rules

We use AI writing tools to help draft and check our guides. Every guide still has to follow the rules on this page: no invented facts, UK conventions, plain words. Example CVs and letters use made-up people and employers.

We fix mistakes

If you spot something wrong, out of date or unclear, tell us and we’ll correct it.
