How to use a cover letter template

Keep the layout simple

Put your name and contact details at the top, then the date and the company’s name. Start with “Dear” and the person’s name if you know it, or “Dear Hiring Manager” if you don’t.

Three or four short paragraphs

Say which job you’re applying for, why you want it, one real example of doing something similar well, and when you’re available. Finish by thanking them for their time.

  • Paragraph 1: the job, and where you saw it
  • Paragraph 2: what you’ve done that fits the job
  • Paragraph 3: why this employer, and when you can start
  • Close: thank them, and sign off

Make each letter fit the job

Read the advert and use the same words it uses for the things you really can do. A short letter written for one job beats a long one sent everywhere. Our guide to writing a cover letter goes through it step by step.

Questions about cover letter templates

How do I get a cover letter in these designs?

Make your CV in the design you like, unlock it, then write a letter from the Letters tab. The letter is drawn in the same design and colour as your CV.

Can I use a different design for my letter?

Your letter follows your CV’s design, so the two always match. Change the CV’s design and the letter changes with it.

What should a UK cover letter look like?

Your name and contact details at the top, the date, the company, a greeting, three or four short paragraphs, and a sign-off. One page is plenty.

Can I download the letter as Word?

Yes. Every letter downloads as a PDF and as a Word file, and you can copy the text into an email too.
