SEN teaching assistant cover letter example

A strong SEN teaching assistant cover letter names the needs you have supported and gives one example of a strategy that helped a child. It should show that you work with the teacher and SENCO, and mention your training and DBS check.

Oakmead Primary School

Dear Mr Fitzgerald,

I would like to apply for the SEN Teaching Assistant post at Oakmead Primary School. I currently give one-to-one support to two pupils with autism in a mainstream primary school, working to the targets in their EHCPs and adapting tasks with visual timetables, now-and-next boards and Makaton.

One of the boys I support used to leave the classroom whenever the lesson changed. With his teacher and the SENCO, we introduced a short countdown card and a choice of two calm-down places. Within a term he was staying in class for most lessons, and last week he asked to read to his group. I record each small step and share my notes before review meetings so that the next adult can build on it.

Oakmead Primary School's resource base for children with communication needs is the kind of setting where I would like to develop. I hold a Level 3 teaching assistant qualification, Makaton training and paediatric first aid, and I have a current enhanced DBS check. Children do best with calm, consistent adults, and that is how I try to work.

Thank you for reading my application. I would be happy to visit the school and meet the team.

Yours sincerely,

Yasmin Hussain

Questions about sen teaching assistant cover letters

Do I need experience with SEN to apply?

Not always, but experience with children with additional needs, including as a parent or volunteer, is valuable. Say what you have learned from it.

Should I use technical terms?

A few, such as EHCP or Makaton, show that you know the field. Keep the rest in plain words.

Who do I write to?

The headteacher or SENCO, usually named in the advert or on the school website.

Can Ceev write a cover letter for me?

Ceev's paid packages include a cover letter written from your CV and the job advert, which you can then adapt for each school.
