Primary teacher cover letter example

A strong primary teacher cover letter names your QTS, year groups and class size up front, then gives one example of spotting a gap in learning and closing it. It should also show what you would bring beyond the classroom and why you want this school.

Riverbank Primary School

Dear Mrs Begum,

I am applying for the Year 4 class teacher post at Riverbank Primary School. I have qualified teacher status and four years' experience teaching Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2, and I currently teach a class of thirty in a two-form-entry school, where I am also subject lead for maths.

I like to find out what pupils already know before I plan the next step. Last year I noticed that eight children had gaps in their times tables that were holding back their work on fractions. I ran short catch-up sessions three mornings a week and added quick retrieval questions to the start of lessons, and by the summer term all eight were working at the expected level. I also work closely with my teaching assistants and the SENCO so that every child can join in.

Riverbank Primary School's reading-for-pleasure programme and its close ties with local families are what draw me to the post. I run a weekly reading club and enjoy organising trips and class assemblies that parents can come to. I hold a current enhanced DBS check and completed safeguarding training this year.

I would be glad to teach a lesson or meet the class as part of the interview process. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Owen Jenkins

Questions about primary teacher cover letters

Do schools want a cover letter or a supporting statement?

Many use an application form with a personal statement. Check what they ask for and follow the person specification.

How long should it be?

One page for a letter. A supporting statement may be longer, often two pages, so follow the school's guidance.

Should I mention the school's Ofsted report?

You can, if it genuinely links to why you want the job. Do not just quote it without adding your own view.
