Security officer cover letter example

A strong security officer cover letter shows a valid SIA licence where required, calm judgement during incidents and thorough reporting habits. One brief example of handling a situation correctly, without sensitive detail, helps demonstrate real experience rather than a general description of the role.

Meridian Business Centre

Dear Mr Dunn,

I am writing to apply for the Security Officer role at Meridian Business Centre advertised on your recruitment site. I currently monitor CCTV and carry out regular patrols at a commercial premises, controlling visitor and contractor access in line with site procedures. I also check identification carefully and keep a clear log of everyone entering and leaving the building.

On one occasion I noticed an unfamiliar vehicle attempting to follow a resident through a controlled barrier and stopped it politely but firmly to check credentials, which was later confirmed as the correct call by site management. I complete accurate incident and handover reports for every shift and remain calm when responding to incidents.

I would like to work at Meridian Business Centre because of its scale and the variety the site would offer, from access control to regular patrols across several buildings. I take my responsibility for the site's safety seriously and always aim to be a visible, reassuring presence for staff and visitors. I hold a valid SIA licence and am flexible with shift patterns, including nights.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my experience further and thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Marsh

Questions about security officer cover letters

Do I need to mention my SIA licence in the cover letter?

Yes, state clearly that you hold a valid SIA licence and, if relevant, which type, since this is a requirement for many front-line roles.

Should I describe a specific incident in detail?

A brief, general description of handling a situation calmly and correctly is enough; save fuller detail for interview if asked.

How do I show I can stay calm under pressure in a cover letter?

Use one short example of responding to a real situation and describe how you kept it under control without exaggerating the detail.
