School leaver cover letter example
A strong school leaver cover letter is honest about having little job history and uses school, work experience and any weekend jobs as proof of effort. It should be short, polite and clear about when you can work and why you want this job.

Fairview Home and Garden
Dear Mr Chaudhry,
I am writing to apply for the Trainee Retail Assistant role at Fairview Home and Garden, advertised on your website. I have just finished sixth form with GCSEs including maths and English and A levels in Business and Geography. I am looking for my first full-time job and I want to learn retail properly.
I do not have a full-time work history, but I have worked on Saturdays at a family-run greengrocer for over a year. I serve customers, use the till, weigh and price stock and help the owner open the shop. I also did a week of work experience at a garden centre, where the manager asked me back for some extra days over the summer.
I am applying to Fairview because I like the mix of plants, homeware and gifts, and because you offer training for new staff. I can work weekends, evenings and holidays, and I am keen to do any training the role includes. I am polite with customers and quick to learn, and I always ask when I am not sure.
Thank you for reading my application. I would be glad to meet you.
Yours sincerely,
Mason Doyle
Tips for a school leaver cover letter
- Be honest that you are new to full-time work, then move quickly to what you have done
- Use weekend jobs, work experience, volunteering and school roles as real evidence of reliability
- Say which qualifications you have, such as GCSEs in maths and English, and any A levels or college course
- State clearly when you can work, and that you are happy to train
- Say why you want this shop, using one detail you noticed about it
- Check spelling and the manager's name carefully, since small mistakes stand out in a short letter
