Student (part-time job) cover letter example

Parkside Newsagents

Dear Mr Clarke,

I am writing to apply for the part-time Sales Assistant position at Parkside Newsagents advertised in your shop window. I am currently studying at college and looking for a part-time role that fits around my timetable. I do not yet have paid work experience, but I volunteer weekly at a local community food bank.

At the food bank I help sort and pack donations and assist visitors in collecting parcels in a friendly, respectful manner, working closely with a small team to keep the space organised. This has given me confidence talking to people I do not know and staying reliable even on busy days. I have also taken part in group coursework at college that involved planning tasks together and meeting shared deadlines.

I would like to work at Parkside Newsagents because it is close to college and I already visit regularly, so I know the shop and its customers a little. I am available most weekday evenings and all day at weekends, and I am keen to bring a strong work ethic to my first part-time role.

I would welcome the chance to discuss the role further and thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Ellie Thompson

Questions about student (part-time job) cover letters

What if I have never had a part-time job before?

Focus on volunteering, college activities or informal work, and be clear and honest about your availability and enthusiasm.

Should I mention my exam or coursework schedule in the letter?

A brief note about your general availability is enough; detailed scheduling is better discussed directly with the employer once shortlisted.

How long should a student cover letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs is plenty at this stage; keep it focused on your strongest, most relevant example.
