Retail assistant cover letter example

A strong retail assistant cover letter shows you can handle customers and daily shop tasks confidently, backed by one specific example of good work. It should also state your shift availability clearly and say why you want to work for that particular shop.

Green Street Shop

Dear Mr Coleman,

I am writing to apply for the Sales Assistant role at Green Street Shop, which I saw advertised in your window. I currently work on the shop floor and till at a busy high-street clothing shop, where I help customers with sizing and stock, restock shelves and rails, and process returns and exchanges in line with store policy.

During the January sales last year I helped reorganise a busy sale rail so customers could find their size quickly, which kept queues shorter and the shop floor tidy despite the extra footfall. I am used to staying calm and helpful when a shop gets busy, and I take pride in leaving a well-stocked, organised floor at the end of a shift.

I would like to work at Green Street Shop because I have always liked how the store is laid out and how friendly the staff are when I visit as a customer. I am available for weekday, evening and weekend shifts, including opening and closing, and I pick up new till systems quickly.

I would welcome the chance to discuss the role with you. Thank you for taking the time to consider my application.

Yours sincerely,

Chloe Bennett

Questions about retail assistant cover letters

How long should a retail cover letter be?

Around three to four short paragraphs on one page is enough; managers are usually reading it quickly between other tasks.

Do I need retail experience to write a strong letter?

No. If you have worked in another customer-facing role, describe that experience and explain how the skills transfer to a shop floor.

Should I mention my availability in the letter or leave it for the interview?

Mention it briefly in the letter, especially if the advert asks for weekend or evening flexibility, since this can affect whether you are shortlisted.

Can I use the same cover letter for every shop I apply to?

Change the shop name and one detail about why you want to work there each time; a letter that reads as copied and pasted is easy to spot.
