Maintenance operative cover letter example

A strong maintenance operative cover letter shows a range of practical skills and a safe approach, with one example of handling an emergency well. It should also make clear that gas and electrical work goes to qualified engineers, and say whether you can be on call.

Linden Housing Association

Dear Ms Begum,

I am applying for the Maintenance Operative role at Linden Housing Association. For the past three years I have carried out day-to-day repairs and planned checks in flats and communal areas for another housing association, and I hold a Level 2 NVQ in maintenance operations.

I complete around fifteen jobs a week, from leaking taps and broken doors to fence and gutter repairs, and I prepare empty flats for new tenants, including painting, lock changes and safety checks. I make emergencies safe first and arrange a qualified engineer whenever the work involves gas or electrics. Last winter a burst pipe flooded a communal hallway late in the day. I stopped the leak, made the hallway safe and stayed until the contractor arrived, so the residents had water back that evening.

I like working with residents. I explain each repair clearly, treat their homes with respect and leave things clean. I keep accurate records on the job system so the next person knows exactly what has been done.

I hold a full driving licence and I can be on call for out-of-hours emergencies. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role. Thank you for reading my application.

Yours sincerely,

Craig Donovan

Questions about maintenance operative cover letters

Should I mention my NVQ in the letter?

Yes, briefly, along with the level and the trade or subject. Say it in the first paragraph, next to your experience.

What if I have worked only as a handyman?

That is fine. Describe the kinds of job, how you dealt with customers and any training you hold, and be clear about what you would need to learn.

How do I show I work safely?

Mention making an area safe before you start, using risk assessments and knowing when to call a qualified engineer.
