Caretaker cover letter example
A strong caretaker cover letter shows that you can be trusted with keys, alarms and a busy building, backed by one example of spotting and fixing a problem early. For a school it should also mention your enhanced DBS check and safeguarding awareness.

Oakfield Primary School
Dear Mrs Chaudhry,
I would like to apply for the Caretaker post at Oakfield Primary School. I have looked after a busy primary school site for the last four years, opening up at 6.30am, carrying out daily safety checks, fixing small faults and locking up each evening.
I keep the fire alarm and water safety logs up to date and test the alarm every week. Last term a blocked drain began to flood the playground before school. I found it on my morning walk-round, cleared it and put out cones, so the playground was safe before the children arrived.
I get on well with staff, pupils and contractors, and I know when to call a qualified tradesperson for gas or electrical work. I hold a current enhanced DBS check and have completed safeguarding awareness training. I can also help with lettings and events in the evenings and at weekends.
Your advert mentions a growing programme of after-school clubs and hall lettings, which is exactly the kind of busy site I enjoy working on. I would be glad to discuss the role with you at interview.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Pritchard
Tips for a caretaker cover letter
- Start with the size and type of site you have looked after and the hours you have covered
- Give one example of spotting and fixing a problem before it affected the site
- Mention keys, alarms and lock-up, because employers want to know they can trust you
- State your enhanced DBS check and safeguarding training if you are applying to a school
- Be clear about which repairs you do and which you leave to qualified tradespeople
