Medical receptionist cover letter example

A strong medical receptionist cover letter shows a calm, kind manner with worried people and real care with private information, backed by one short example. It should also name any systems you have used and say when you can work, including early starts.

Elmwood Medical Practice

Dear Ms Whitaker,

I am writing to apply for the Medical Receptionist role at Elmwood Medical Practice, which I saw on your website. For the past three years I have worked on the front desk of a busy dental practice, where I check patients in, book appointments and answer the phone all day.

Patients are often worried when they ring, and a calm voice and a clear next step make the biggest difference. Last winter a mother rang in tears because her son had a swollen face. I listened, checked the diary with the dentist and found an urgent slot that same morning. I keep patient details private and never leave screens or papers where others can see them.

I would like to move into general practice because I enjoy helping people with a wide range of needs, and a practice the size of Elmwood would teach me a great deal. I am ready to learn a clinical system such as SystmOne. I can work early starts, including the 8am phone rush, and I can cover some later sessions.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be glad to meet you and talk about how I could help your patients and your team.

Yours sincerely,

Questions about medical receptionist cover letters

Do I need to have worked in a GP surgery to write a good letter?

No. Reception, customer service or admin experience works well if you show how you deal with worried or upset people and keep information private.

How long should a medical receptionist cover letter be?

Three or four short paragraphs on one page is enough, since the practice manager is usually reading between other tasks.

What if the advert does not give a name?

Check the practice website for the practice manager's name. If you cannot find one, 'Dear Hiring Manager,' with 'Kind regards,' is fine.
