Elmhurst Community Hospital

Dear Mr Thompson,

I am applying for the Healthcare Assistant vacancy on the medical ward at Elmhurst Community Hospital. I currently work as a healthcare assistant on a busy hospital ward, where I help patients with washing, dressing, eating and moving, and take observations such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen levels.

Last winter I noticed that an elderly patient was quieter than usual and that her breathing rate had crept up between two sets of observations. I told the nurse in charge straight away, and a doctor reviewed her within the hour. I have learned that small changes matter, and that patients and their families feel safer when staff listen and pass things on clearly.

Elmhurst Community Hospital interests me because of its focus on helping older patients recover well enough to go home, and I would like to be part of that work. I have completed the Care Certificate and training in moving and handling, infection control and basic life support, and I hold a current enhanced DBS check. I can work days, nights and weekends.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be glad to come to an interview.

Yours sincerely,

Questions about healthcare assistant cover letters

Can I write a healthcare assistant cover letter with only care home experience?

Yes. Personal care, records and reporting to nurses all carry over. Describe these and say you are keen to learn hospital routines.

Should I mention wanting to become a nurse?

A short line is fine if it is true, but the letter should focus on the role you are applying for and the care you give now.

How long should the letter be?

One page. Three or four short paragraphs are enough, because recruiters often read many applications.
