Nurse cover letter example
A strong nurse cover letter states your NMC registration and setting early, then gives one short clinical example that shows good judgement. It should show how you communicate with patients and families and why you want this particular service.

Ashgrove Community Health
Dear Ms Abara,
I am applying for the Staff Nurse post on the medical unit at Ashgrove Community Health. I am registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and have worked for two years as a staff nurse on a busy medical ward, caring for eight to ten patients per shift.
My ward looks after many older patients with several conditions, so I am used to medication rounds, wound care, IV therapy and early warning scores, and I escalate concerns quickly. Last spring I noticed that a patient's early warning score had risen over two sets of observations, and I asked the doctor to review him at once. He was moved to a higher level of care that afternoon. I try to explain things clearly to patients and families, especially at discharge, when medicines and follow-up can be confusing.
I would like to join Ashgrove Community Health because of its focus on safe discharge and its links with community nursing teams. I have completed my mandatory training and immediate life support, and my NMC registration is current. I am happy to work long days, nights and weekends.
Thank you for reading my application. I would welcome the chance to discuss the post at interview.
Yours sincerely,
Bethany Morgan
Tips for a nurse cover letter
- State your NMC registration and setting in the first paragraph
- Use one short clinical example that shows judgement, such as noticing a patient getting worse and escalating
- Show communication with patients and families, not only clinical skills
- Mention training that fits the post, such as immediate life support or IV therapy
- Say why you want this particular service or team
- Leave out anything that could identify a patient, even in a short example
Pair it with a CV: see our nurse CV example.
