Mechanic cover letter example
A strong mechanic cover letter shows that you find the real cause of a fault, explain it honestly to customers and keep your qualifications up to date. One clear example of a tricky diagnosis is more convincing than a list of jobs.

Parkside Garage
Dear Mr Dunn,
I am applying for the Mechanic vacancy at Parkside Garage. I hold IMI Level 3 in light vehicle maintenance and repair, and for five years I have serviced and repaired cars at a busy independent garage, including brakes, clutches and timing belts.
I like finding the real cause of a fault rather than changing parts and hoping. Recently a customer's car kept losing power, and two garages had already replaced sensors. I read the fault codes, tested the wiring and found a chafed loom. I repaired it and the fault did not return. I explain problems in plain words, give an honest price and only fit what is needed.
Parkside's name for straight dealing is what attracts me. I am an MOT tester for Class 4 and 7, I have completed IMI TechSafe training for hybrid and electric vehicles, and I have a full UK driving licence. I am happy to work Saturdays and I keep my tools and workspace in good order.
Thank you for considering my application. I would be glad to come in for a trade test or a chat.
Yours sincerely,
Carlos Ferreira
Tips for a mechanic cover letter
- List your IMI or City & Guilds level in the first paragraph
- Give one example of a tricky fault you diagnosed, showing how you worked it out
- Mention MOT tester status only if you currently hold it, and the classes it covers
- Name any hybrid or electric vehicle training and the diagnostic equipment you use
- Say what you value about the garage, such as honest dealing or the type of vehicles it works on
Pair it with a CV: see our mechanic CV example.
