Junior software developer cover letter example

A strong junior software developer cover letter points to one real project, says what you built and what you learned, and links to code people can read. It should also show that you can work in a team and that you ask questions early.

Fernhill Digital

Dear Mr Ashworth,

I am writing to apply for the Junior Software Developer role at Fernhill Digital, advertised on your careers page. I have a computer science degree and six months of experience as a junior developer at a small web agency, working mainly in React, TypeScript and Node.js.

I work from tickets, write unit tests for new code, use Git and pull requests every day and take part in code review with a senior developer. Outside work I built a volunteer rota app for a local food bank. I met the coordinator first to agree what it needed to do, then built it, wrote a short guide and trained two coordinators to use it. It is still in use, and the code is on my GitHub page.

I am applying to Fernhill because I saw that you build accessible websites for public sector clients, and I would like to improve my testing and accessibility skills in a team that cares about them. I am still learning, and I ask questions early rather than getting stuck.

I would welcome the chance to talk about my work and go through my code with you. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Ffion Jenkins

Questions about junior software developer cover letters

Should I include a GitHub link in a cover letter?

Yes, if the code is tidy and readable. Mention the project by name and say what the link shows.

What if I have no paid experience?

Use personal projects, university work, open-source contributions or volunteer builds, and describe the problems you solved.

How technical should the letter be?

Explain what you built in plain words first, then name the main tools. A non-technical recruiter may read it before a developer does.
