Career changer cover letter example

A strong career changer cover letter explains the change in one clear sentence, then links the skills from your old job to the new role with real examples. It should also show what you have already done towards the new career, such as volunteering or training.

Meadowview Care Home

Dear Mrs Sutherland,

I am writing to apply for the Care Assistant role at Meadowview Care Home. After nine years in retail, most recently as a shop supervisor, I am changing career into care, and I would like to start that at Meadowview.

Two years ago I began helping to look after my mother after a fall, and for over a year I have volunteered every week at a community lunch club for older people. There I serve meals, sit with guests who want company, and tell the organiser if someone seems unwell. I also hold a Level 2 food hygiene certificate. This work has shown me that I want to do this full time.

Retail taught me skills that I will use in care. I am patient with people who are upset, I listen before I answer, I am reliable on early and late shifts, and I have trained new colleagues. I know care is different and that I have much to learn, so I am ready to complete the Care Certificate and any other training you require.

I can work days, evenings, weekends and some nights. I would welcome the chance to meet you. Thank you for considering my application.

Yours sincerely,

Gary Whitlock

Questions about career changer cover letters

Should I explain why I am leaving my old job?

Focus on why you are drawn to the new work rather than what you want to leave. One honest sentence is enough.

What if I have no experience in the new field?

Use volunteering, family caring, training or related tasks from your current job. Show that you are ready to learn.

Is it a problem if I am older than other applicants?

Many employers value life experience and reliability. Show that you are ready to learn new things and work as part of a team.

Should I send the same letter for every job?

Change the name, the job and one detail about why you chose that employer each time.
