Sales assistant cover letter example
A strong sales assistant cover letter tells one short story of helping a customer find the right product, then shows you know the shop or brand you are applying to. It should also give your availability, including weekends and sale periods.

Ashdown Outdoor
Dear Ms Brennan,
I am applying for the Sales Assistant job at Ashdown Outdoor that you advertised on your website. I work in a small outdoor clothing and footwear shop, where I advise customers on boots, waterproofs and rucksacks and help them choose what suits how they will really use it.
Recently a customer came in for trainers to wear on a three-day walk. I asked about the route, the weather and how heavy her pack would be, and I recommended that she try proper walking boots instead. She came back a week later to tell me they had saved her feet, and to buy socks for her husband. I enjoy that kind of sale, where the customer leaves with the right thing and wants to come back.
I have followed Ashdown Outdoor for some time because you run free kit checks before big trips, and that is the approach to selling I believe in. I learn product detail quickly, I keep displays tidy and stocked, and I have worked towards weekly sales targets. I can work weekends, evenings and sale periods.
I would be pleased to talk about the role. Thank you for reading my application.
Yours sincerely,
Kasia Nowak
Tips for a sales assistant cover letter
- Open with the kind of products you sell now, so the manager can see the link to their shop
- Tell one short story of helping a customer choose, rather than listing skills
- Mention targets, commission or extra sales only if you can describe them honestly
- Say something real about why you want to work for that shop, such as a service you like or a product range you know
- Give your availability, including weekends and sale periods
Pair it with a CV: see our sales assistant CV example.
